Every enthusiast platform has a legendary flaw, and the intermediate shaft bearing on certain water-cooled Porsche flat-sixes is the most repeated example. The failure is real, the consequences are severe, and the design changed across model years. What forums lose is denominator: thousands of cars ran their whole lives without incident, and the loudest threads are written by the unlucky.
The useful way to evaluate any famous flaw is three questions. How likely is it on this specific year and engine variant? What does prevention cost relative to the car's value? And is there a documented inspection that tells you the current state rather than the statistical risk?
For most legendary faults, the answer to the third question is yes. Oil analysis and filter inspection reveal bearing material long before catastrophic failure. Borescope inspection reveals cylinder scoring. Compression and leak-down testing reveal sealing condition. A pre-purchase inspection that includes those three costs a fraction of one percent of a car's value and replaces speculation with data.
The wrong reactions are equally common: buying the fear and overpaying for a preventive job the car does not need, or dismissing the fear and skipping the inspection. Somewhere in between sits the sensible owner who knows the specific risk profile of their variant, inspects on a schedule, and budgets for the repair as a known possibility rather than a surprise.
