Range Rover air suspension: why it fails, what it costs, and how to stop it repeating

A sagging corner overnight is the classic symptom. The compressor usually gets blamed — and usually it is the second victim, not the first.

You park level and come back to a Range Rover kneeling on one corner. On air-sprung Land Rover platforms this is one of the most common complaints in the independent-repair world, and the sequence behind it is almost always the same: a rubber air spring develops a small leak, the system tries to compensate, and the compressor runs far beyond its intended duty cycle.

That is why replacing only the compressor is such a common and expensive mistake. The compressor burned out because it was doing the work of a leaking bag. Fit a new one to a system that still leaks and you have bought yourself the same repair again, usually within a year. The correct order is: find the leak, replace the failed springs, then judge whether the compressor and dryer survived.

Diagnosis is not exotic. A soapy-water test around the air spring seams and fittings while the system is pressurised finds most leaks. Scan data adds the rest: compressor run time, target versus actual ride height per corner, and fault history for the valve block. Height sensor faults imitate leaks convincingly — the car chases a height it is being told wrong about — so the sensors get checked before anything is unbolted.

On preventive terms: air springs are rubber, and rubber ages on heat and ozone, not just mileage. Los Angeles is hard on them. Cars over roughly eight years old are worth inspecting annually, and replacing springs in axle pairs keeps the ride balanced. If a shop quotes a compressor without ever mentioning a leak test, get a second opinion before you approve the work.
