Why modern collision repair is now 60% electronics work
A bumper is no longer a bumper. It is a radar housing, a parking-sensor array and a pedestrian-detection surface — and every one of them has to be recalibrated.

Ten years ago a front-end repair was a mechanical job. You straightened, you replaced, you painted, you blended. Today the same job on a 2023 sedan touches a forward-facing radar, a windshield camera, four ultrasonic sensors and at least two control modules that all need to agree on where the road is.
This is the part most owners never see on an estimate. The panel is the cheap half. The expensive half is proving that the car's driver-assistance systems still measure the world correctly after the panel moved. A radar bracket that sits two degrees off will not throw a warning light — it will simply brake a car-length later than it should.
That is why serious shops run static and dynamic ADAS calibration as a standard line item, not an upsell. Static calibration happens indoors against targets on a measured floor; dynamic calibration happens on the road at a specified speed. Many vehicles need both, in a specific order, with a battery maintainer connected the whole time.
There is a second consequence: paint. Some manufacturers specify a maximum coating thickness over radar-transparent areas, because paint film and metallic pigment attenuate the signal. A beautiful finish that is 40 microns too thick can degrade a sensor's range. Measuring film build is now part of quality control, not vanity.
For an owner, the practical takeaway is short. Ask three questions before you approve a collision repair: Will the ADAS systems be recalibrated? Will I get the calibration report? And is the paint thickness measured over sensor zones? A shop that answers all three without hesitating is a shop that understands what it is actually repairing.
